LaVena's father, Dr. John Johnson was a military psychologist for his entire career, so the family was familiar with military issues. To this day Dr. Johnson is convinced that LaVena had been indoctrinated by recruiters visiting her high school, Hazelwood Central--a mandate introduced by the No Child Left Behind Act.

She was found dead in her tent. Her death was controversially ruled as a suicide but the evidence of rape and battery led many to believe the United States Department of Defense covered it up. Midtown Films is currently producing The Silent Truth, a documentary which tells the story of nineteen year-old U.S. Army Private LaVena Johnson, who was found dead on the military base in Balad, Iraq in July, 2005. The United States Army ruled her death as a suicide resulting from a self-inflicted M-16 rifle shot wound. LaVena Johnson grew up in Florissant, Missouri with her father Dr. John Johnson, a service veteran, her mother Linda Johnson, and her four siblings.
